“I work to break the tradition of photography, as a documentary support. I paint with reality instead of just showing it."

Josephine ERNST

Josephine ERNST was born in 1953 in Denmark where she lives and works

Inspiration

Life is complicated and consists of many layers.
We see one thing and imagine that something else - seeing - is individual.
Showing reality in a new way can challenge its accuracy and by abolishing reality visually it can create new perspectives.
To make images is to point to unknown things - to create a new focus.
To make art is to change. Change is an art.

Method

With my training and my many years of work as a scenographer, I chose to create - outside the walls of the theater - my own universes and fictional spaces. I work with the contrast between nature and artificial and human remains.

The tooth of time is very fascinating, because it reminds us of the course of life, its repetitions and its end.
At the same time, I also work to break the tradition of photography, as a documentary support. I paint with reality instead of just showing it. Photography can easily tell adventures, visions and show emotions, even if the basic elements come from daily life and from what is close to us and which we would not otherwise have the eye.

By composing photos in several layers and emphasizing the interaction between light and dark, I obtain a new and different reality, which is then printed on canvas, transparent material or museum paper.

Many of my patterns are repeated to be constantly put into a new context - just as the same phrase is often repeated in the different instrument groups of classical music.
The patterns are constructed from considerations of Swedish nature, big city culture and the objects that artificial consumer culture leaves behind. In this way, the reality of the photograph can be lifted and new angles of life or new moods can be experienced - depending on the viewer's background, relationships and thoughts.
